Do I ask for a hotel room upgrade?

I am booking a London Marriott Hotel and on Trip Advisor a lot of guests reviewing mention being upgraded.

My question is do I ask for an upgrade or just smile nicely and hope they offer me one?

do you have any status with Marriott? I am a lowly silver and never had an upgrade, colleagues are gold or platinum and get one more often than not

If you ask you may well be told what the rate for the upgraded room is and ask if you want to change

You hand them your credit card and say 'charge the upgrade to my card please'

  • That's not going to be very much a money saving stay though is it Malkie?! I don't have any status with Marriott no. Guess we'll just get what we are given. x

Check in, see what they say...if they dont offer then just ask "is there any chance of an upgrade" - nowt to lose. Also, if you don't like your room, ask to see another. In the same price band there can be a big difference between rooms so worth asking if they have a nicer room.
And if, you know, your history...

I'd hope they give you the worst room in your category if you ask to be upgraded, I've checked in to so many hotels and flights behind someone begging to be upgraded. It lacks dignity and is so unlikely it's not worth it. They will only upgrade when it suits them, normally because they are overbooked and normally frequent users first.

  • You could try the £20 upgrade trick...

Hand over your credit card with a £20 note and say 'are there any complimentary upgrades available?'

If they do not upgrade you the 'done thing' is to return the £20. But you never know they might not ;-)

Moneysaving is not about asking for a free upgrade

I agree - when I was a Gold I grew to expect an upgrade, now I am a Silver I don't exist! Marriott are strict on their upgrade policies, possibly the most strict chain I know.

I have never known the $20 trick to work in the UK, and I certainly wouldn't risk £20!
    Gone ... or have I?
