DSL Wireless VOIP Router

Advice sought please!
I'm in the market for a new laptop & wireless router. As I don't have a phoneline (use SIP based VOIP instead) I've been looking at VOIP routers.
Is it this simple, or am I missing something:
1. Buy & configure a Wireless DSL VOIP router. I can now access the internet wirelessly on new laptop, plus old desktop machine.
2. Plug in a standard old analogue "BT" phone (either a wired or "cordless" thing.
3. Somehow configure the router to use my VOIP account (I currently use VOIPcheap.co.uk).
4. I can now make VOIP calls via the Router, EVEN WHEN THE PC's are off? (But my USB Telewest Cable modem would be on, of course).
Is that it?
Anyone do this?
Any suggestions on a good DSL VOIP Router? D-Link maybe? Costs?
THANKS SO MUCH!
J

Have a look at draytek.co.uk
I have the 2800VG which is wireless with 2 VoIP ports which hook up to my plusnet VoIP. The PC isn't involved at all with VoIP (unless you want to setup a softphone on there aswell - which i do).
Have a look at the Draytek VoIP forum at Draytek. There are threads on there about voipcheap.co.uk
Dont understand point 4. Why would you keep the USB Modem when you have a router ?NURSE: "Shouldn't it be sterilized, doctor?"
DR. BENWAY: "Very likely but there's no time."0 -
Surely you need a cable router not a dsl one if your on telewest?0
-
Yes, if you have Cable you'd be better off with a Draytek 2900VG, you can connect your Cable Modem via Ethernet to the 2900. It's quite pricey, but as with all Draytek products, it's excellent in terms of reliability and features.0

Yeah, excellent routers. Never had a problem with mine, very feature rich. One of my more valued buys."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0

Thanks for that! I will be spending my evening reading Draytek forums.
W.r.t point 4: I though that I would need to use my existing cable modem, with a VOIP Wireless Router (i.e Router only. no modem. cheaper this way?)littleange_com wrote:Surely you need a cable router not a dsl one if your on telewest?
I thought Cable = DSL, and BT = ADSL, I stand corrected!nickmack wrote:Yes, if you have Cable you'd be better off with a Draytek 2900VG, you can connect your Cable Modem via Ethernet to the 2900. Ok, thanks. Sounds good except the bit about being pricey!
Anything under £100?0 -

ADSL is a form of DSL. DSL is basically technology that runs down the copper cables of your telephone line. Cable is a seperate thing. Common mistake often made by shops which gets passed onto the consumer."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

You would need to use your existing Cable Modem with a 2900VG as it has no built in modem. I don't think there is a VOIP Cable router with built in Cable Modem.I thought Cable = DSL, and BT = ADSL, I stand corrected!
People often misuse the terms ADSL and DSL. ADSL is a form of DSL. In this case the A stands for Asymmetric meaning that the download speed is faster than the upload. DSL services work over telephone lines. Cable is fibre optic and should be referred to as 'Cable' and not 'DSL'Anything under £100?
Any Router (without modem) and including VOIP should do. I'm sure some suggestions will be forthcoming, I only really use Draytek gear.0 -
THANKS ALL! (Can't use thanks button in work, but i'll do it at home later!!)
Checking prices on a "Draytek 2900VG" now (and cheaper equivs!)0
