My sentiments exactly. I'd be wanting to stick my head in an oven if it wasn't for these nice people and the advice I've read here :)

    "We're on a fishing trip"

"Please phone us so we can harass and threaten you about a debt that either isn't yours or is so old it's statute barred"

Just thought I'd translate that letter for you...

It is interesting to see the change of tactic and suggests they are attempting to ensure they get the right person before pursuing the debt.

It is, though, only request for assistance which you are perfectly entitled to ignore - in the same way that you can ignore a letter asking you to give money to some good cause.

I have also recieved a letter exactly the same and I ignored it, I have now recieved a second letter from them stating how much and who too I am sure this debt is SB as over six years old, should I send prove it letter or just continue to ignore?

Andy, sounds like a stupid question but, do you recognise the debt they speak of? What makes you think it's SB?
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

    No absolute 'should' or 'shouldn't'.

If you are 100% certain that the debt is SB, then you can send the SB letter if you feel you need to.

MH will sometimes make up a fictitious recent payment, so can require some time to call their bluff.

Or you may prefer not to bite.

See if they just give up "fishing" due to a lack of response. Keeping the SB letter in reserve in case they (very very unlikely) daftly start making serious legal moves.

Depends on what you are most comfortable with.

I think I would be looking at a 'prove it' letter, then SB. You wouldn't want them to miss out any steps in coming to a logical conclusion it was Statute Barred and you would like to give them every opportunity to come to that conclusion on their own. I would, any way.

Possibly. If there was any doubt about whether the debt being chased was actually yours and whether it was SB.

If no doubt, then you are probably wasting time, stamps and effort in an extra unnecessary round of letter 'ping pong'.

In the end though, it is a judgement call that only the person being chased can make.
