Nice neutral (light beige?), comfy but durable carpets

Hi guys,

I'm after some nice and neutral carpets to do the entire of the upstairs of my house (sans bathrooms) and the stairs too, so apologies for asking a fairly strange question but I want to make 100% this is right!

I obviously want something that looks nice, but just as importantly I want something that's easy to hoover, comfy on the feet and very durable, ie it's not going to quickly get wrecked and I have to replace the whole carpet again!

Any recommendations would be fantastic, thanks!

If you have cats, or I suppose dogs for that matter, avoid Berber. The people at Carpetwrong told me that they run like a ladder in tights if the animals either scratch the carpet or get their claws caught in it.

Thanks HTH! I don't have any pets at the moment but may get a cat at some point, so it's good to know to avoid Berber :D

I'm not sure of your budget, but we love our Telenzo carpet on the stairs and landing so much that I'm now awaiting delivery of some more for a couple of other rooms. Looks great, the high wool ratio ones feel heavenly on your bare feet and have been very durable so far. (We actually have 2 cats, one of whom loves running up and down the stairs like a maniac, and the carpet has stood up well to that!)

Here's a link to their main site - you might have to change the language (see the top right hand corner if so): http://www.edel.nl/telenzo_wool/

Thanks, mind if I ask where you got it from? Just looking online and can't find a place to buy it at all, so I imagine the chances of me finding it in a local store would be very slim unfortunately :(

I'm buying mine from a local independent furnishings store. Try contacting the company directly and asking for a list of stockists local to you. Here are their details:
Edel Telenzo Carpets Ltd, 2-4 Southgate, Elland, West Yorkshire, HX5 0BW Tel: 01422 374417 | Fax: 01422 377452 | email: sales@edeltelenzocarpets.co.uk Otherwise, this place in Sheffield seems to stock them - not somewhere I've dealt with before, but might be worth a try: http://www.mintoncarpets.co.uk/
  • we are having a carpet fitted next week in the same areas you are after, and have gone for cormar oaklands in rice. Its a good 'neutral' as far as i'm concerned and the quality is good without it being crazy on price. The cormar home counties in fossil is also a good colour. They are both 80/20 and are 10 guage which i think makes them dense enough for wear and tear. After reading lots on here, we are having cloud 9 underlay too.

Oh and we chose the 42oz as I was told with the 50oz the pile length is increased to increase the weight so they just shadow more. Goes without saying to shop around, our quotes varied by £600!!!

I don't think there's a durable light carpet made, unless everyone who enters the house takes off their shoes.

  • I am looking to buy carpet soon and my local carpet shop seem to be very good. They told me wool carpet ie 80 wool-20 nylon are best if you hoover up every couple of days. They said cleaning them too often is not great but hoovering them lifts the dirt if done regularly.

Otherwise think about more nylonin the mix.
You can also get stain treated carpet,or stain treatments applied. The better the underlay, the springier the final result. rubber backed carpets dont need underlay i think.,but canvas do. I would get samples and look at the colour ,in situ to avoid colour mistakes.

I bought a beige carpet because I thought it would help to lighten my dark hallway. Never again. Only ever looks nice within 5 minutes of vacuuming. I do ask people to take off their shoes, but wiping the dog's feet every time he comes in has lost it's novelty value after a year or so.

OP, get the best you can afford but think very carefully about the colour.
