Complaint about house sale

  • Wow, thanks everyone for replying. It does make it feel better knowing that 11 weeks isn’t as bad as it could be.

So my problem should be with my estate agent who told us if we dropped our sale price by £5,000 we would have a buyer within a week (it took 4 weeks), and complete in 6 weeks. They increased my expectations so I would sell with them.

It seems we all know that estate agents lie so is there anything that I can do about them? Or can they do what they like, take as long as they like, be useless on the phone, have no answers when you need them and lie to you but still take the money once the sale has gone through?

Would a complaint to them make any differance?

As an agent I never try put timescales on selling a property, too many variables. It may sell to the first viewer, it may be the 101st, likewise the agent has no control over how long a chain will take to complete, solicitors work at different paces to each other, surveys & mortgage offers all come out at different timescales.

If you feel you were mislead by the agent, on purpose, by all means complain to the MD or Area Manager.
  • Unfortunately complaining to an Estate Agent would be wasted energy.
They'd listen to you, maybe apologise and still take the full fees!!!
  • Wow! You are so lucky! We sold our house earlier this year. Despite it being in a very sought after area AND everyone including the agents telling us it would sell immediately, we still had to drop the price by £15,000 and it still took nearly 12 months from the time it went on to the market until Completion! I don't think you have any grounds to complain at all. It's just one of those things.
