How much money does a student need to live on?

I have just finished Uni and when I went, my parents only paid for my accommodation and tuition (including uni essentials like books). I didn't qualify for any type of loan because I was an international student. I got a part time job and my parents were there for EMERGENCIES only.
They set a cap on how much I was allowed to spend per month on accommodation and left me to search/research accommodation in my area to find a place I was happy with. A lot of the cost depends on WHERE your daughter is going to Uni. But here was the break down for me living in Manchester on average over 3 years:
Accommodation: £2,700 per year
All accommodation bills: £450 per year
Phone: £180 per year (12 month contract)
Transport: £0 per year (it worked out that paying a bit extra to stay near Uni didn't cost as much as a yearly bus pass)
Food: £1,200 per year (on average)
Grand average yearly total: £4,530
Average monthly budget: £503 for 9 months of Uni
hope this helps!
