Northampton

Options
Possibly looking at a move ot Norhtampton in the next year or so. Just wondering if someone could give me some idea of the better areas within Northampton? I am more interested in areas with traditional houses (detatched or semi). The good areas I have been told about are Spinney Hill and Abington. Can someone tell me what they are like and suggest others? Also, I am not interested in new style houses on estates. I know there are loads in Northampton but I dont really like them.

And please ... messages like "Northampton is rubbish, you dont wanna live there" etc etc are pointless. A waste of your time typing the message and they dont help me with my research either.

Thanks in advance.

  • I remember going to a very posh party in Duston - out on the road towards Althorp - all large detached, this one had a swimming pool.
  • I live in Abington at the moment and I'm moving to Kingsthorpe. Abington is a lovely area, very sought after and consequently does command a premium over other areas. Most houses in this area are victorian terraces: there are some LARGE detached properties and a smattering of semis/end-terraces. Abington is great because it has a lovely park as well as being very convenient for the town centre. Kingsthorpe is a newer area (apart from the village) and is much more mixed in terms of types of housing. there is some rough and some upmarket. It's further from town but now the other half commutes to Leicester it avoids him having to drive through the town centre and also we could afford a better house in a great area bordering on open countryside.

I suppose it depends what is important to you. Spinney Hill is fine as long as you don't want too many amenities in walking distance. You get a quite a lot for your money there. Duston has a nice village-type centre and has expanded rapidly so there are plenty of fairly new four bed detached and the like as well as older type houses. It depends what you like doing I suppose. Do you want pubs on your doorstep? Independent shops? A quiet road? Close to town? Open spaces? Where will you be working? Speaking from a purely personal perspective, Abington and Kingsthorpe are my favourite areas but of course others will have different views.

Oh yes, I agree with you about the new estates thing btw. avoid the Hunsburies, Wootton Fields, Grange Park, and swathes of Duston if you fel like this. Other areas I would suggest you avoid on the ground s they are grotty: The Eastern Districts, Weston favell, St James, The Mounts and probably loads of others I can't remember so do ask me if you need anything more specific :)
