To Bailey and others - this is what makes me wonder whether i'm just pandering to the shops and advertisers.

I've bought stuff in the past - a FP smartcycle was one and it sat in the corner barely used - on the other hand cheaper toys have been played with for hours.

you can't win as a parent!

Also don't worry want others are spending, spend what you can afford and get what you feel is appropriate, i don't know about your sons school but at my daughters they have lessons in computing at least once a week, they each get given a laptop to use or at least one between two, and do various activities on them, she even showed me what the laptop could do as I didn't know, and for some children a laptop can be a great tool. You could get it as a family computer if you feel it is to much for one child. My daughter uses it for homework and fun.

I find that it is easier to buy for my son as the toys he likes seem to be made better, cars, trains, etc, whereas my daughters toys always seemed to fall apart.

Ah now this is interesting james as I feel some parents feel bad for 'only having £50' whereas you seem to be '£50 is plenty for them'.

Therefore if we don't pressure ourselves into thinking we are being bad things will be so much easier?

My son is now 18, but I've been trying to pursuade the family (ten of us altogether with grandparents) to do a secret santa so we all just get one present each.

So far, the idea has gone down like a lead balloon.

I start my shopping early for kiddies 5 & 2, buy things throughout the year when they are in sales. I've just doubled up some of my Tesco coupons for toys so have 100quids worth of toys for just the delivery costs, normally only leave the main pressie until December to get (as they change their minds), but after last year with the hamster shortage, have bought the toy story lego train already so just their stockings to go really.
