Barclays Additions?

I have been a Barclays customer for 15 years. It's generally been alright, but I still thought about switching my current account to my Nationwide account, which I use for travel money at the moment.

Today, I spoke to someone on my telephone banking about Barclays Additions, You pay £5 a month and get free £100 overdraft, discounted overdraft after that, free phone insurance, card fraud insurance and one or two other bits and bobs. It sounded pretty promising.

Has anyone used Additions before? If so, what is it like?

before i became more "money savvy" i had an editions account for years and years.

it started at £5.00pm then 6 , then 9 then 10. when it went to 12 enough was enough and i decided to look at what i was getting for my money.

basically nothing. so i went into my branch and said i wanted to cancel the additions part of my account.

i am sure they would have tried to get me to stay on it, but as no people were on the help desk i was talking to someone at a teller point and there was a long queue. i think they just wanted rid of me and put the request in to cancel it straight away.

    £12.00pm saved instantly.

    so OP, GET RID.

On my Smile account I have a £500 overdraft limit at 11.9%, I am usually close to the limit at least half the month and overdrawn nearly the whole month. I never pay more than £3 or £4 in interest. Why on earth would I want to spend £5 a month EVERY month for a 'free' £100 overdraft?

It also gets you Green Flag cover at different levels depending which tier of Additions you are on - on Addittions the level of cover is worth approx £50.

Also, with Additions Plus you get free Travel Insurance for the whole family. That's worth at least £90 per year.

Just those two on their own pay for the monthly fee.

BUT, if you don't need either of those, it's probably not worth the money.

AFAIK with First Additions (£5 p.m.) the level of cover is zilch (nothing).

I cannot comment on details and level of cover, but according to Martin cheapest family cover costs £60: arrow.gifAnnual policy for a family

See this link for the benefits of Barclays Additions:-

  • That's funny this link doesn't mention the phone insurance, which was the main attraction for me.

The overdraft is good, though I am hoping to clear it so it won't be so useful in the future.

    Thanks for all your comments.
