Surely that would only be the safe maximum pressure for the tyre, not the best (or recommended) operating pressure for the vehicle they are fitted to?

Inflating tyres to the max pressure molded on the sidewall could make the handling of the vehicle highly dangerous

As the post said look at the sticker on driver door pillar, or inside the fuel filler cap. If it's not in either place try looking in your car's manual.

As above, the best place to look is your car's handbook. Failing that, try here :

    http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/tyre-pressure.asp

I've no idea how accurate it is, and it also only gives one pressure - most owners manuals specify a higher pressure for a fully loaded car than for a partially loaded one.

Remember to check the pressures when the tyre is cold, and remember that any pressure gauge is not necessarily completely accurate :-)
