I like to keep my parmesan in an old jar in the fridge. It doesn't sweat like in a plastic bag, and keeps for ages. Also use the rind to flavour soups/bolog sauce/sauces etc - chuck in whole, leave while it bubbles away and just remove before serving.

OP, if you are just looking at spending less on a piece of Parmesan, rather than the most economical (eg £5 pack might cheaper overall but you only want to spend £1.50 sort of thing) just ask for a small piece at the deli counter. I used to do this til I realised I actually liked it too (was brought up with the smelly feet pre-grated in a tub stuff - yuk) and just buy big packs now.

    It's only a game

Try the fresh parmesan in the Sainsbury's Basics Range. It is great and good value too. Plus I like the one from Lidl. Oh yeah, and use it till it is gone! hths.

Oh thanks to all of you, that's great it will last longer than they say, thank goodness!
  • Tesco has their Parmesan wedges - 250g i think they are, on offer at the moment at 2 for £4 which is quite good. Unfortunately they'd sold out :undecided when i wanted to buy it earlier so i had to opt for Grand Padano instead...i guess everyone is getting in on the offer quickly, in my store anyway. You might have more luck though! ;)

I buy Gran Padano from Sainsbury's (it's on offer quite frequently I find) I keep a supply ready grated in a tub in the freezer and just get out a bit at a time as needed (it soon defrosts!). Unfortunately I know I shall never be as lucky as I was a couple of years ago when a local clearance type grocers was selling blocks of Parmesan off at 60p a packet! I bought 6 packs, grated the lot in my food processor, froze it and it kept us going for a good 12 months!

  • I tend to find sainsburys is a good bet. They sell smaller bags and have it on their delli counter which is really useful when you only want it for a recipe once in a while.

I'm another Aldi supporter - always buy my parmesan from them and their feta cubes in oil
;) If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!
  • Aldi and like other posters have said, keep it till it has all gone.

If it looks abit dry. I slice some off before grating.

Get yourself a parmesan grater, they are invlaluable to grate it nice a small.
