Where to find good value Parmesan?

I'd like to buy some parmesan for sprinkling on the top of recipes/pastas, does anyone know where I can buy this at the lowest price? Thanks

You havent mentioned whether you want a fresh piece or grated? This does say hard cheese but its there when I search parmesan.

  • My Italian other half advises that you should NEVER buy the pre-grated stuff as "you don't know what is in it"! Lidl and Aldi both have decent Parmigano and/or Gran Padano - the latter is very similar, if not identical, but is not from Parma and tends to be cheaper.

I would have real doubts about buying any "Italian cheese" which doesn't stste where it is from/what it is (cf sarahg's post)

I agree totally and I would never buy anything but fresh, but..... the OP did say the cheapest and they didnt mention whether they wanted fresh or pre packaged grated. So she/he may be happy to buy the grated stuff ;)

Thanks both of you, sounds like grated isn't that good an idea then! I have no Lidl/Aldi nearby, only a morrisons and a Tesco.

i usually buy gran padano as its cheaper - just come back from hols in italy with a huge wedge of it as it was cheaper there.

i agree with the aldi comment, theirs is very good value

Just had a look online at Tesco and they have grana padano, it's £2.50 for 200g, it's quite expensive isn't it, it wouldn't be so bad if it kept for a while, but it says use within 5 days of opening.

Parmesan and Grana Padano are very hard cheese, so I would ignore the advice to use within 5 days.

I tend to have a block of the Aldi/Lidl on the go and it can be in the fridge wrapped up for a couple of months by the time I get through the block

Total carp. Use it until it's run out, in the unlikely event green mouldy bits appear just scrape them off and carry on. This type of cheese is matured for about two years to be decent quality, so how could they carefully mature it for months then sell you it JUST at the point where it will become inedible in another few days.

I can't even remember when I bought the block of parmesan that's in my fridge, but it was a good few months ago.
