Urgent q...sealing holes round pipes.

Quick question.....large holes in floor where copper pipes come up. I know you can't use expanding foam to seal these, so what can I use?

make a bit of cardboard slightly larger than the hole. tie some string to it and knot it. thro the middle.
put the cardboard inside the hole and pull the string tight. then fill the hole with flexible filler/sealer.
using the cardboard as a backing piece.

you might need to tie off the string somewhere, whilst the filler dries.

so make sure your string is long enough!

    ps
you may need to do it twice. either side of the pipe/hole.
    Get some gorm.

andrew....most professionals wont use expanding foam around copper pipe. I have to be honest and admit to not fully understanding why, but enough of them are vehemently against it to make me believe they know what they are talking about.

ormus.....good idea about the cardboard, although when I started reading your reply I immediately thought of my old Mum who used to cut out cardboard circles and wrap wool round them to make pom poms. :rotfl:

i use anything that comes to hand. wood/cardboard/metal.
a piece of wire mesh is the best way.
held with metal wire, rather than string.
    Get some gorm.

There is no reason why foam can not be used. Some foams may degrade over time with prolonged contact above certain temperatures (50-60 degrees), but not many and not often at domestic temperatures. If foam is used, then there needs to be a further materal to cover the exposed face to protect it from impact or UV

The pipes should be sleeved first, and the hole can be filled with whatever you like

If this is in a flat where there are flats above/below then a fire retardant filler should be used to reduce fire risk. If its in your own house and is a concrete floor i would fill the bulk with fibreglass or similar and finish of with cement or concrete mix. If its a wooden floor then replace the timber floor with tighter fitting wood screwed down which will allow access later should it be needed. For any of the filling options then some foam lagging placed around the pipes first will allow for any expansion/contraction.

    Just replace the dodgy floorboarding.

Wet newspaper, squeezed then pushed in to hole to just below surface level, then fill to level, allow to dry, sand off.

    Job done.:)
