Internet connection keeps failing - please help

Options
Hi. We have a problem with our internet connection but it only affects one of our laptops.
We've recently moved house and now have broadband from BT through my wife's work. We have a personal Dell laptop and my wife's work Fujitsu laptop. When using the Dell laptop the internet connection keeps failing - at least every 15 minutes - and the only way to reconnect seems to be to reboot the laptop. The internet connection doesn't keep failing on the Fujitsu laptop
We're connecting by an ethernet cable to the modem (we're not using wireless), and that cable works fine on the Fujitsu laptop.

Our Dell laptop is out of warranty so Dell support won't help - I hope someone else can.

Thanks

look in Device Manager to see what ethernet chip you have, then go to the manufacturer and see if there's a driver update.

  • rdpro - thanks for the advice. I've looked on my Device Manager and I think my ethernet chip is a "Broadcom 440*10/100 Integrated Controller". I've clikced "update driver" but it says that it's there isn't a better alternative.
I've tried the Dell website but can't fathom if there is an update. What do you suggest?

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
The cables clearly fine, so that points to something undesireable running on your computer

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

malwarebytes is WAAAAY out of date
Were on version 1.46 and something along the lines of 4733 for the database version
You need to UPDATE at least twice (keep updating until it says your upto date) and scan again

When you say the internet fails. You mean completely (As in signal lost) or its just not displaying webpages?

  • My modem/router is still working (and I can access the internet on our other laptops) but on this laptop it comes up with the "Firefox is unable to open this page" and similar pages with Int Explorer/Chrome etc. I've tried to go to Network connections and repair the connection, but this doesn't work. I hope you can solve this - its been a long running source of frustration.
