Amendments to car insurance

Had car insurance policy in place, nov to oct. Have now been told policy does not include protected no claims and I want to simply update the existing policy, the provider cannot do this.

Looks like will have to swallow £35 admin fee and get new policy or use current policy.
Is this STD practice ?

A lot of companies don't like to add protection mid term because I guess they figure you may claim and then you have the protection there =/ meh, just cxx and get a new pol if you want it that badly

Why not wait until October and add it in at renewal (or rebroker the cover then)?

looking at new policies and equivalent are 200 pounds more expensive.
would have thought existing insurer would have tried to retain business

Premiums are higher this year than last year.

They may offer it at renewal. just not mid-term. However, the consumer driven market for car insurance is not one that currently focuses on retention much.
