My dad has a garmin GPS he uses for running to monitor his tracks ect which connects to the computer via serial. Recently he has purchased a new computer which obviously hasn't come with a serial port. I tried to set things up for him with a serial>usb converter however Windows 7 doesn't recognise this at all. Every cable I've looked for online doesn't come with a driver of its own as Windows 7 is meant to have a bank of these drivers built in - so I'm stuck of how to proceed, I've already tried 3 cables and the device still works on his old computer so the problem can only be Windows not recognising the device via the adapter as far as I can see?

Have you tried this USB/RS232 converter cable on the old pc?
If that works it is definitely Win7.0 -
Does the adapter you have not come with a driver CD?
This startech one lists Windows 7 compatibility:
http://www.startech.com/item-specs/ICUSB232-USB-to-RS232-DB9-Serial-Adapter-Cable-Male-to-Male-Serial-Adapter-USB-to-Serial.aspx
I think you'll find it cheaper from a reseller than direct from Startech.0 -
Allan87, can't help, but you are not alone, at work they use a similar adapter.
It's used to transfer data from a laptop to a Sokkia EDM, this uses Prolific drivers from a mini CD.
Works fine with XPpro but nothing with Vista, nothing with Win 7 to try it on.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Keyspan are the only ones I've found that actually work and will work with anything. They're about 10 times the cost as the cheap Ebay ones @ £25
