D & G Insurance

Hi can anyone give a bit of advice, i have had insurance on my kitchen appliances for years with Domestic and General, a couple of weeks ago i had to make a call for an engineer to fix the dishwasher (which is on a seperate agreement), and also the washing machine was playing up, which is on a kitchen plan agreement. Anyway the engineer came, great, repaired the appliances and went on his way.
A week later i received a bill for the washing machine, on phoning i was told my policy was void, due to unpaid direct debit. I have no arguement with that, but my point is that i should of been told this when i phoned to book an engineer, which would of then given me the option of whether to have there services or look locally.
I have phoned and written to them, and have not had much joy, i have said ive been a loyal customer for years, and have always been satisfied with the service, but feel cheated by not being told my kitchen policy was void.
Does anyone know if they have to tell me as an insurance company my policy was not valid? And make me aware? I had no letter before to inform me, as i would not of phoned for a washing machine repair, only dishwasher, and had i known, dont they think i would of set it back up and then phoned for a repair?
Anyone have suggestions, would be appreciated as i really cannot afford the bill, as my husband is out of work, reason why i always have insurance.

Unfortunately though, because you didn't pay the direct debit you have no cover. They probably did chase for the direct debit or you should have seen it unpaid on your bank account I would think - how far back does it go?

I don't think there is anything you can do as there was a contract with the Company to pay the premiums. You will have to pay the bill or run the risk of them taking action to recover the money.

Yeah i know its my fault that i should of been aware the policy was invalid, my problem is that when i booked for an engineer, shouldnt the company of told me that i had no cover and given me the option of wanting their engineer to repair my machine?
I think had i been given the option i would of got quotes first from local business.
I feel that it should of been Domestic and Generals duty to have told me i had no cover. I would like to know if there is any legal issues with this?
    thanks
