Myxi Jab Cost?

Hi Kaelea
So sorry to hear about your rabbits. But thats what the vet & the rabbit rescue told us. 6-12 months depending on whether you're high risk or not. We live in a town between Newcastle & Sunderland and there have been no reported outbreaks near us, although there were some in Durham and Northumberland recently. Our vet said the risk factors include things such as:
*whether you have any other pets/ wild animals they could come into contact with
*whether your rabbits are indoors or outdoors (indoors less likely to come into contact with other animals & the virus)
*whether there are outbreaks in the area
*whether you are near water (cant remember exactly which but either the Myxi or VHD can be spread by insects that like stagnant water)
We dont have any other pets, dont have wild rabbits or foxes in the area, the rabbits dont come into contact with any other pets or other rabbits and there have been no outbreaks in our immediate area so we are considered low risk.
None of our rabbits or anyone I know in the area with a rabbit has ever had a sudden death or lost one to myxi. Have you reported yours so that the local vets & rabbit owners/breeders & clubs are aware there's a strain going round?
Our new bunny gets her booster on monday (she's 16months old - just got her from rescue the other week), will ask if I should revert to every 6months, thanks for the heads up. Our other rabbit (they've not been bonded yet - need them both to be wormed & vaccinated before I start the "bunny dates" and let them share hutch/run space) he's just had his myxi & VHD in may/june so i'll ask whether he should come back at xmas for anther booster, but previously he's just had one every year.
He gets wormed every 6 months (or every 3 if he has a companion bunny), he recently lost his bunny wife to gut stasis (kinda like a really bad tummy bug that stops them eating altogether and their little bodies just go into shut down reallly fast). but I was told each time when he & his ex-wife had their jabs that it was 12months. Best check.
BTW i've got the prices, its £11.37 for myxi and £13.05 for VHD. Odd prices but I guess they must buy the vaccine in batches and then divide out the cost??0 -
hi
I'm a little more south than you are, near Leeds
I guess my bunnies were high risk, we have foxes in the field behind us, hedgehogs that come into the garden, as well as my dog and cat and other [STRIKE]bunnies[/STRIKE] bun
I thought I had covered our bunnies though, they were vaccinated, I had no idea they could still get it
fingers crossed for the one remaining, altho my vet has given her the all clear,
obviously my vet knows there is Myxi about as he's treated/put down my buns and my friend is friends with the local rabbit rescue so she told them
not sure who else around here there is to tellA heap big thank you to everyone who posts the comps, your all stars!
Proud to of never used or felt the need to use a chain of any sorts on a puppy0 -
No, I'm REALLY REALLY far up north east!:D
So sorry to hear about your buns, yeah sadly they can still catch myxi even with the vaccinations - they're just less LIKELY to catch it and the strains are supposed to be less harsh meaning they've got a better chance of surviving with treatment.
Such a horrible disease, you'd think when they created it and released it into the wild they'd at least have waited til they'd got a cure or treatment for the pet/breeding/show rabbits. Stupid & cruel.
Kinda like childrens vaccinations, I've had my german measles jab but I still caught it when my sister brought it home!
We've never seen any hedgehogs in our garden but it is really well gated/concreted round the edges, the only thing we get is birds and the odd cat (but they're chased away by me with a water pistol). Our hutch is on quite long legs too so nothing rodent sized can get within reach of the bunnies.0 -

Thats a great price.
Perhaps I should move up north!!!
(Sorry to hear about you losing one of your bunnies)0 -
Hi Poppy
We had our 2 bunnies vaccinated last night and it cost £34.20 for the 2. That included a 10% discount for more than 1 bunny.
Hope your is ok

Thanks Mummyofone.
Thats a good price.
Yes thanks he is doing great.I havn't had a rabbit for a good few years now(had Gpigs for the last 6 years) We are really enjoying him he is such a character, he loves to jump up and down onto boxes so I have made a sort of play area for him with all different levels.I got some from Costco that are really good as they have a cut out at the front so he can run into them and hide if he wants to.
He hasn't been out on the grass yet, I am waiting until he has had all his injections, as we have a lot of wild rabbits here.0 -
Ours are approximately 2 and a half years old.
They originally belonged to an old lady who couldnt look after them properly, they then went to Pets at Home. My boss then adopted them but is out at work all day so wanted them to have a good home. They also escaped twice which didnt help. So for £50 we got 2 rabbits, food, bowl, bottle etc and a hutch worth £150.
We have had them for about a year now. They are sisters so probably best kept together

Hi all - I usually pay about £15 for my BOOSTERS. the original vaccinations cost about £30. Don't forget to consider this when comparing costs if you're shopping around

Does the £30 cover both vaccination ie myxi and VHD? Only myxi has a booster so effectively you are just paying £15 per vacc.0 -
That's each. VHD needs to be renewed every 12 months, Myxo every 6 months if you're in a high-risk area.Grocery Challenge 2010:
