I have a different degree than I thought I had

I graduated last year.
I thought got a 2:1
I was expecting a 2:1 and the result tanscript when I finished indacated thats what I was getting.
But I've just looked a the certificate and it says I have a 2:2. A little shocked and confused.
The certificate was sent to my parent's house and I've only just been given it.

It's probably to late to sort anything with uni But is there anything I can do?

Or does it really matter? I still have a degree
Or is just a piece of paper it took me 3 years to get?

How does the transcript indicate a 2.1?

I no longer have a transcript but I remember it having a percentage for the modules taken and my dissertation. It didn't give a final grade but I interpreted the percentage into a grade. But transcript may of mentioned that the results weren't final.
  • On my transcript it gave the classification of the degree I got.

It is unlikely that the classification of your degree is simply a case of taking the average % and translating it into a classification - i.e. a mean average of 70% doesn't necessarily mean a 1st classification.

You need to have a look at the transcript or ask your university for a breakdown to see the weighting of each module towards the final classification.

It is possible that your certificate is wrong but it is also possible that you have misunderstood your transcript. The only way to find out is to ask your university.

I know the final classification of my degree was based on my dissertation only. The transcript only gave a percentage and not a classification

Did you get a graduation video or have a ceremony as they are usually carried out in classification order.

    Worth double checking anyway.

Are you employed as you may need to decide what to do about rectifying your hr record? If you are in a graduate job, have a good record and can show it was a legitimate mistake then I don't think it would matter for this or subsequent jobs. Find out first what you did get.

Did your dissertation have a higher weighting than other modules? I have never heard of a final classification being based on one module result.

What, exactly, does the certificate say? Sometimes these can be a bit confusing.

Whether or not you bother finding out if this is a mistake you need to think about how it will impact on you and future employment. Do you have a job at present? If not, or if you are looking to enter graduate schemes or any other job that requires a 2.1, you should think about looking into it.

Whilst a dissertation can swing things for you if you are borderline, I have never heard of a final classification being based solely on that. Seems like a waste of two years!

My first 2 years I studied a Foundation Degree so the third year top-up was another course. The final classification was based on solely on my dissertation.

The Certificate says "... with Second Class Honours, Second Division"

Did you not study any other modules in your final year?
