Worried about MOT, please advise?

  • As above, it does sound quite a list but apart from them seat belt issue sounds like 2 new MP struts a few bushes and several brake pipes. The welding, maybe £50?

You need to find a trusted local garage if you can't or don't know anyone who can do the repairs. Please please please don't go to a chain or similar or they will have your pants down.

But again, what value is an X reg Ka????

Time to ponder methinks. For me welding = replacement car time, and I can weld, ;);););)

Thanks! I know better than to take it to a chain! I've been taking it to the same garage for the past 3 years and they seem to be honest, I had a problem with my brake light last year (dodgy wires!) and they fixed it for me and didn't charge me anything!

I think I should MOT it, but if it fails, what will I do with it?

mounting bushes on the top are separate parts.. approx 8-£10 each from ecp.. it just depends on what it needs this year.. if it passes then use it for another year..

take it in and see what it fails on.. there is no point trying to work out costs yet if they will pass this year. Things like brake pipes may pass if you clean them up and then grease them but until you know for sure what needs replacing then it is all guess work. get a break down of prices from your garage too for repairing each item to see if they are ripping you off.

sell it spares or repair on ebay or sell it for scrap ( cartakeback.com) offer about 120 for a car atm

if it fails post the fail sheet up on here and see what advice you get.. if it costs 300 or so to get it through remember better the devil you know - what can you get for 300 these days thats worth having??

AS said, smartest move would be to take it in this year, and see how it does.

Don't spend a fortune on it though, bin it at the first sign of a big bill.

See the other almost identical post thats paralleling this, bottom line; surrender the tax and offer on ebay as runner or spares. ;);)

The main problem with the rust would be that last year a bit of cleaning up and using kurust or similiar would have done just fine, now it may have got worse over the last year and may need a plate, I would put it in for the test and see what it failed on, if the same advisories haven't got worse and are still just advisories then get up your Halfods or loack car spares store and get under there one sunday and sort out the rust.

Though as has been said before KA's have a habit of being a rusty sod, and they don't improve with rust being left to fester, I am as guilty as anybody of not sorting out minor rust issues when I was younger, but now I would always sort it out as soon as I knew about it.

If it has leather then it is probably a Luxury Ka, they are still popular with the younger driver.

If the OP does spend a few quid on it then they must keep it for another few years, in my opinion, or break it for spares on Ebay, the seats, wheels etc are worth a few quid, then scrap what you can't sell.

I would have no idea what to do about rust! My ex husband use to deal with the cars, but we have just got divorced, so I'm totally alone. My Dad was very handy with cars, but he passed away in Feb this year (not wanting to sound like this is a sob story!) I know I should make an effort and learn, but I wouldn't know where to start :(

It is a KA Luxury, has alloys, CD player etc.

Keep thinking I might be best to sell now, I've just been on that webuyanycar for a rough price and they said they will give me 450.00 for it. If I got anything around that I could add it to the 1000 I already have saved and get something else.

But that starts another problem, I've never bought a car on my own before and wouldn't know what to look for. :(

Actually feel like crying now. :(

Thanks for the helpful responses though, you've been very kind and helpful.
