help with playing pc game

hi. i purchased a game called "gilbert goodright and the mushroom of phungoria" - don't laugh lol i love adventure games.
anyway i tried to fully install it as my computer has loads of memory but it got jammed when it was almost complete. i have windows xp and it is supposed to play on everything up to 2000. i then tried the minimum install which worked but then i couldn't get the characters to do anything. usually these games work with the mouse or keys but nothing seems to work. i was wondering if i had to install it in one of the previous systems which i know there is a function on the computer but i cannot find it. any help grately appreciated as i think i have bought a dud.
