How long before posting

Hi
Just a bit of a straw poll as to how long you consider reasonable between purchase and posting.

I try to post every tuesday, thursday and saturday, but sometimes like last week I don't make all these. Last week I didn't make the thursday posting because of my husbands work commitments.

It depends on method of payment and how soon its made. If its immediate payment by PP then item is sent the next day, same with postal orders. If they pay by cheque the item isn't sent till cq clears. If the buyer takes a while to pay with no communication then I always tell hubby to make them wait :D

When I buy I like the item to be with me within 7 days of auction ending as I pay immediately with PP, unless I'm advised otherwise.

Reasonable time? This will mean lots of things to people. Myself, I think anything from same day to three days after, depending on postage used - if I pay for 1st, then there is no point waiting for it to be posted next week. 2nd class and packages can wait longer. But unless I need the item for a specific occasion (and would discuss this with seller first) then I only start wondering after a week...

I don't believe IMMEDIATE dispatch is reasonable either and it is very prompt if seller posts the next day.

As a seller I usually do next day posting. But sometimes just the wrapping takes me too long, so it's the day after that. If I don't manage it by the third day I will usually bump up the postage service to faster if possible.

On items that don't need to go to the Post Office, then I try to post them within 2 working days of receipt of payment. As I state this on my auction pages, if it should take longer then I always e-mail the buyer, apologising and explaining why.

On items that need to go via the Post office then I try to do it within 3 or 4 days (and again, this is stated on my auction pages, etc.)

When I buy stuff then I usually give a week before writing to find out what's going on (unless I need it quickly, in which case I always write to the buyer beforehand to check that they can send the item straight away).

Always try to post next day.
  • I try to post within a couple of days of receiving cleared payment, and sometimes even post low value items before cheques clear if I'm posting stuff anyway, but I'd usually consider anything up to about 4 working days to be acceptable. If I pay for something using Paypal, I don't get worried about its non-appearance until it's been over a week, then I might send a polite message asking if it's been sent yet so I know roughly when to expect it.

I would normally expect my item to arrive in a week as i use paypal. When posting out I usually like to have my items posted the next working day after payment. I rarely get cheques but when I do I find it difficult to get to the bank so will often post out items under £10 before I even bank the cheque.

  • I can post small things like books every day using the post box at the end of the road but for my ebay items I have a note in all my listings and my 'thank you for paying' notes to say that I can only post things 3 times a week as I'm currently sharing a car, I don't specify the days.
In practice I can get to the PO most days but it gives me just a bit of breathing space and I don't feel any pressure as I've already explained the situation.

If you are selling regularly I thing next day is important. If you sell odds and sods within a couple of days is acceptable.

But the main thing is to keep in contact with your buyer, just let them know when and how the item will be posted. Good comms normally overcomes most problems with delayed postage, buyers are normally happy as long as they know what is going on.
  • I've never had a buyer email me to ask or complain about delivery times, so I must be doing something right!

Items that can go in the post box (sims or really small items) will always go within 24 hours, as will most other items.

I'm really lucky to have a PO at the bottom of the road, however some days I don't leave the house, so it depends how good a mood hubby's in!
