Car seats for classic cars

Both DH and I have classic cars. When sproglet arrives it would be nice to have the option to take them out in our nice cars occasionally rather than always go in the normal car.

I know that we could go in to Mothercare or Halfords and say "do you have a seat for my car" but I was just wondering if there were any companies that specialised in seats for older cars, rather than trying to get a new seat to fit and wondering if it really does.

Thanks

  • I don't know of any personally, but I did work in a shop that sold car seats and we often had people come in with older style cars and we just did what you were thinking- try and try until something fits!

Buckle crunch is a real problem with cars that are older- seat belts can be shorter and some older cars have buckles that are on stalks and that can be a nightmare to work around. but after a lot of trial and error you may be able to find something. The Brevi Grand Prix (suitable from birth) and the Mamas and Papas Pro Tec (from 9 months + minimum) were two that occassionally fitted from the top of my mind. But to be honest, neither would be my idea of the ideal car seat.
  • I think you'd need to specify the cars. Rather than just a generalised classic car, as seats are so blooming specific. I have one of the top selling small family cars and there are only about 2 seats that I can use with seatbelts, luckily we had to option to add isofix (yes manufacturer did not add as standard), but oh has a 12 year old car and any seat seems to fit his. M & D have a current MPV that again has stupidly short seatbelts that fit hardly any seats, but had isofix as standard.

What age are your classics? We have audi quattros, 1985 and 1988 and found that car seats were fine in these. It depends on the age of your vehicles really.

What do you do when the car is so old it doesn't have seat belts? Do you just chuck a car seat in the back and let it rattle around?
  • Well, mines a 1988 citroen 2cv. Not sure how happy DH will be to have a baby in there anyway though :(

DH has a 1968 Daimler, with front seatbelts added much later.

Sounds about right, in the early ‘60s my parents used to do Notts to Wales and assorted holidays with three small boys on the back seat and a baby girl in a carry-cot on their laps and not a seat belt in sight although when grandkids arrived my dad was evangelical about them being strapped in

OP.......I’d have thought just about any seat designed for belts will work even if you have to fit longer belts, look on it as an opportunity to upgrade to inertial reels if you haven’t already got them

i would say go for safety over style i am sure you should be able to get a reliable sturdy durable seat that would fit in classic car
at the end of day there must be some sort of seats as people who had kids before must of used something

Ha ha! No they didn't... or at least virtually nobody did. I travelled in the back of my parent's car without any kind of restraint.

My dad fitted a baby seat in our 1966 Hillman Minx for my little sister. It didn't rely on the seat belts to fix it (there weren't any). I don't remember ever seeing another car with one fitted.

I could ask him where he got it. Mind you, it was in 1970.

When I used to work in the motor industry we used to have statistics on the how well cars (and their occupants) faired in accidents.

The 2CV was consistently at the bottom of the list.

personally if a kids not safe its not worth risking it

a kids life is worth more than going out in classic car

plus if it aint secure you will get done by police if it does not meet legal requirements
