problem with internet log in pages

Having an internet problem today & don't seem to be able to access pages that need a log in. I've tried both bank accounts & ebay. All I get are error pages & these error pages take ages to load & then come up with Cannot Find Server in the blue title bar at the top, & page cannot be displayed on the white page.
It seems strange as the actual site pages load ok but it's just a problem trying to log in. It always does my head in when things are ok one day & then suddenly go awry without me having a clue why or how to remedy it.
Any advice will earn my heartfelt thanks.:o

The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I have Windows xp home, zone alarm firewall & avg anti virus. I'm on aol, but have tried also using internet explorer browser & it's exactly the same.
I probably sound a bit dim but not sure exactly what a router is. I tried turning computer off then on again, but it made no difference.
I'm just dreading this being a complicated problem as my brain gets completely frazzled with anything the least technical. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
