PC won't shut down, only goes to sleep

Hi all,

I've just moved house recently, and something I discovered when moving house was that my PC never shut down. I selected shut down from the list available on Vista, yet it always went to sleep and could be woken up by a mouse move or a keyboard press.

I thought reinstalling windows would fix it (I was due to do this anyway) and I started this last night. However, it's still happening after I've reinstalled Windows.

Any ideas?

  • Have you checked your bios for any strange "Wake On" settings that might have changed.

I can not remember if they also work for a powered down unit.

Okay, I will have a look when I get back from work today. Thank you for the suggestion.

Do you know where it would be in the BIOS or what it would be called? I know that BIOS's vary, but would be better if I had an idea where I was looking in the BIOS!

    Thanks

    Try this
    1. Open Power Options by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33.jpg, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then clicking Power Options.
    2. On the Select a power plan page, click Change plan settings next to the selected plan.
    3. On the Change settings for the plan page, click Change advanced power settings.

    Hi imho,

I have already tried that... plus after I installed windows, I haven't changed any of those settings which by default, should work (if that makes sense?).

I couldn't find any BIOS settings, though I'm not entirely sure what I should be looking for, as some of it was beyond me.

    Anyone got any further suggestions?
  • What make and model computer is it? What BIOS version is running (should state on start-up).

Have you looked to update your BIOS from the manufacturer website? Which may or may not help.

Of course, a move away from Vista to W7 would be wise ;)
    Friendly greeting!

I found with a win7 install that one pc wasn't shutting down but restarting. Cured by installing the m/board drivers which I'd neglected to do as everything "just seemed to work" in win7.
