Nivea sun cream has turned all my (brand new) swimsuits yellow. They have offered a refund and a refund on stain remover (which didn't work) surely they should reimburse me for the ruined clothes (I have receipts). Where do I stand legally?

Alot of suncreams (cheaper ones) do this, wouldnt expect it from nivea though. Id try and get them professionally cleaned and then get a refund for that.Back by no demand whatsoever.0

I use Nivea on my DS and I've noticed all his white t-shirts now have a yellow tinge around the neck and sleeves, have spoken to other nursery mums about it, they all use different suncreams, and the majority do this.0

Over many years I have found that many, if not all, sun creams do cause discolouration on clothing. I thought it was fairly well accepted that you should try to avoid getting it on your clothes and that you should let it dry on the skin before putting clothing on top.
Its a price you pay for decent skin protection. I have found that the colourless 'dry' sprays cause less problems though.ELITE 5:2

I was very careful to avoid getting on the swimsuits - applied cream naked - it's impossible to avoid it completely. I have now found a cream which does not turn clothes yellow (Vichy) but my question is - Are Nivea legally bound to reimburse for items their product damaged. Regardless of whether or not most creams do this, they shouldn't.0

I'll be writing to Heinz then, to complain about ketchup staining my kids t-shirts
And my local indian
And those people that put tomatos into tins, and sell tomato puree
And all the paint manufacturers
And my local council to complain about that grass that keeps staining the kids trousers.
Oh, and don't forget bleach, that ruins clothes too.
And probably all of the schools, because for some reason my kids clothes keep getting dirty - the cheek of it.
BAN IT ALL!!!!!! BAN EVERYTHING!!!!0 -
Does the suncream say "avoid getting onto clothes" or similar on the pack? All the varieties in my cupboards do. (and yes, there's a Nivea in there too)
Oh and I learned about this the hard way when my, now 18 year old son, was under a year old as the necklines of his t-shirts went yellow, so it's hardly a new concept.
It's only a game

Probably not as it could be argued that any cream/lotion which gets onto clothing may well leave a mark. However, I've just checked various bottle in my cupboard and, although they say to avoid contact with eyes, there is no warning about clothing. I'm pretty sure sun cream used to carry a clothing warning but its not there now!
The fact that they don't warn you about a ptoentialproblem might add weight to your claim but, then again, just because you are not told of a potential hazard doesn't remove your obligation to use common sense IFYSWIM.
I would think you would have more success appealing to their sense of fair play, good customer service etc and negotiate an ex gratia payment rather than go down the legal obligation road.ELITE 5:2

I had a similar problem with Banana Boat sun spray. It leaked in my handbag and the whole underside has a burnt appearance and is crispy  Surely sun screen shouldn't do that? It wasn't a cheap bag either. I chucked it straight in the bin and got a new brand- I didn't like the idea of what it was doing to my skin if it could 'burn' a bag.0
