Is there an order I should follow when installing .NET Service Packs?

I've put off installing these, but, now they've built up, I feel I should do something about them. Should I install them individually and in the order they are listed in "Automatic Updates"?

1. Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update for Windows 2000 and XP KB979906

2. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Sec Update for Win 2000, Win Server 2003 and XP KB974417

3. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and 2.0 SP2 Sec Update for Win 2000, Win Server 2003 and XP x86 KB979907

4. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and 2.0 SP2 Update for Win Server 2003 and XP x86 KB982524

5. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Win Server 2003 and XP x86 KB982168

6. Update to .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 for the .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 x86 KB963707

Can they cause any problems or are they pretty benign?

I use XP SP2 (yet to update to XP SP3) and, just in case, I'll create a Restore Point before each update.

Thanks for any help.

Just select them all, Windows Update will install them in the right order automatically, you don't need to select an order.

If I remember rightly, I installed .Net 2.0, followed by .NET 3.5 on an XP machine Windows Update got stuck in an endless loop (repeatedly prompting me to install a .NET update).

I later discovered that .NET 3.5 is backward-compatible with 2.0 so there was no need to install both. Uninstalling both of them, then re-installing just .NET 3.5 fixed the issue.

Anyway, I think it was .NET 2.0 and 3.5... it might be worth checking!
  • I've just installed SP3 on my laptop and just this very second I've selected all .net framework updates to install - Windows Update will figure out the order - or at least for me it has in the past.

Everything seems to have gone without a hitch.

This is the order in which they were installed:

    3. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and 2.0 SP2 Sec Update for Win 2000, Win Server 2003 and XP x86 KB979907

    5. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Win Server 2003 and XP x86 KB982168

    6. Update to .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 for the .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 x86 KB963707

    4. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and 2.0 SP2 Update for Win Server 2003 and XP x86 KB982524

    1. Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update for Windows 2000 and XP KB979906

    2. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Sec Update for Win 2000, Win Server 2003 and XP KB974417
