Happy jamming!;)If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
I always do this!
I wash them in the dishwasher to get rid of all of the glue and then they are ready
Enjoy! Just remember to warm them in the oven!Feb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790 -
I think the lids can't go in the microwave but can be sterilised by pouring on boiling water...

Wash them in hot soapy water and give them a rinse to get any bubbles off, then bung in the oven with the jars.
Try to keep jam jars for jam and pickle jars for chutneys though, as it's hard to get rid of the vinegar smell from pickle jars and you don't want it transfering to your jam.0 -
If you need to replace lids - Chutney needs plastic coated lids (on the inside) Lakeland used to stock them, I think they were red or blue gingham patterned. It matters not if you try and fail, and fail and try again; But it matters much if you try and fail, and fail to try again.

I sterilise my jars in a low oven. I then put the lids in once I switch the oven off. Being metal, they conduct the heat well, and sterilise quickly
You might want to have a look at this older thread; I'll merge this later to keep ideas together.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
Hello all
If I am making jams etc, do I really need to sterilise the jar? If so , how do I do it?
Would a hot wash with soapy water do the trick?
Thanks

Hi,
wash in hot soapy water and then stick them in an oven at 100 degrees c for about 15 minutes. I put them on a baking tray so they're open at the top. Also stick the lids in there too, unless they're plastic.0
