I used to put mine in a cool oven at 130c for about 15 / 20 minutes.

After washing in soapy water and rinsing well, of course.

  • If you are just putting jam in the kilner jars(a wise move to keep them) as long as they are good and clean, and it sounds like they are, remove the rubber seals and pop the jars on a tray in a coolish oven and they will be good and sterile.
even if your oven is 150C its a lot hotter than boiling water!
Pop the rings in a pan and pour a kettle of boiling water over them to keep them soft and clean. If they are as old as the jars, you may need to replace them as the rubber may have perished----most kitchen shops keep stocks, or try Lakeland.
Keep having visions of all that lucious fruit.............mmmmmmmmm

I agree with the others. Give them a good wash and then dry them in the oven.

The rubber seal does feel a bit hard and brittle so I sent hubby to lakeland this morning :) I have a batch on at the moment. Just strawberry as I find they don't really keep that well once picked.. I am so so looking forward to having scrummy jam all through winter.

I am now starting to think about possibly making some chutneys for winter. My friends think I am mad 2 and I bake and am making jam on a saturday instead of being shopping

I half fill my jars with water and put in the microwave for 10 minutes then tipthe water out and allow them to dry off in the heat from the water upside down on a clean tea towel.
    Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.
  • I fill mine to the top with boiling water and leave to stand whilst I am making the jam
  • There is something enormously comforting knowing that so many others have been doing the same as myself all these years.............
    keep jamming, sisters !!!
