If you were to go into the Halifax and explain that you are not happy with the student account you have and that you really want a Halifax account instead, they may be able to transfer the balance of your overdraft from you NW account to your new Halifax account and close the NW account for you as well. Go into your local branch and have a chat with one of their advisors, I'm sure they will help as they will want your custom!Sam0

I'm doing that. I opened up my Halifax one and called them to transfer my NatWest direct debits across. As soon as I put my loan in they will up my overdraft, and I will ring up NatWest - I'm going to downgrade the account to a normal one without the overdraft - and have a word.
I mean for two or three weeks I will be in breach of my NatWest contract - Halifax aren't bvothered about it - but I'm not too worried.Any advice given is done so purely on the basis that it be taken as guidance and not a definitive answer to a question. If you are uncertain or confused, always consult your own legal representative.0 -
FYI you will only get £500 of the advertised £2750 overdraft offered by Halifax when you open the account.0

I got £0 when I opened the account, they added £1000 when I queried it, and my application for the full amount was denied. I think this was because I had paid very little money in at this point. I will try again when they can see I pay in money on a regular basis.0

i had the same problem i called up to see if i had the 2750 overdraft and was told i only had 500! After a brief conversation they said they would up it to 1000 but its till not the 2750 advertised is it! Ive now applied to their overdraught board thingy for the full amount but it think its a bit cheeky of them. If i dont get the full amount then theres much better bank account offeres out their than thiers.0

I recently went into my local branch and told them I needed my overdraft raised to at least £1500 as i'm moving back off to uni within the next week. I was told they could only raise it to £1000, after which I gave the cashier my views on their fabulous £2750 overdraft bribe, and expressed my displeasure at the relatively lame amount he'd offered! He then told me I might be able to get £1500 but they would need to put it by head office first. So I had to go over to customer services and make the request there, which AFAIK has been made. So we'll have to see what happens!0

I am looking to switch from abbey to Halifax. The thing is if they are going to offer me such a low limit then there is no point. I will get my student loan/grant paid into there but also my wages which are £450+ a month. Do you think they will at least match abbey's overdraft facility that I have at the moment?"He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,

The most they'll give you to start with is £500 i'm afraid, unless you can explain your circumstances (about wanting to transfer your overdraft from elsewhere) in which case they might make an expection.0
