Windows outlook/outlook express

Help please - I lost my hard drive 2 weeks ago on a dell pc (preloaded XP office). Whether I ever received a XP disc from Dell I don't know but I sure couldn't find it when I needed it.
I have replaced the hard drive and the data has been retrieved and returned on an external hard drive. All OK so far. I have bought a new edition of windows XP home, downloaded openoffice and can now access word and excel files. Again all ok. But I cannot access my outlook files from the external drive because I only have express on the PC.
Do I have any options other than buying outlook?
Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers

  • I'm afraid not, if they are in native PST format then the only app that will open them is Outlook :(

EDIT, unless there has been a "very" recent plugin that allows OpenOffice to import them. I'm not aware of anything though.

  • Ring Dell and ask them for the disks, they often send them to you for free, including XP. You've paid for XP and office once already, so no need to buy them again.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Outlook stores files in a different format to Outlook Express.

    PST files for MS Outlook

    DBX files for Outlook Express

Messages from other e-mail programs. Including Netscape and Eudora. You can also import messages from many Microsoft products, such as Outlook or older versions of Outlook Express

Using the Outlook Express Import Wizard, you can easily import e-mail messages from a variety of popular Internet e-mail programs, such as Netscape Communicator and Eudora, as well as from Exchange Server and Outlook.

    1.
On the File menu, point to Import, and then click Messages.

    2.
Select the e-mail program you want to import messages from, and then click Next.

    3.
Verify the location of your messages, and then click Next.

    4.
Choose All folders to import all the messages, and then click Next. You can also choose Selected Folders to import messages from one or more folders.

    5.
    Click Finish.

Note: If you are unsure which e-mail program and version you want to import messages from, start the e-mail program. On the Help menu, select About and check the information for program and version

You need the "alternate" program to be able to this....i.e they would need Outlook installed to import into OE. You cannot just "import" from a PST.
