Neighbours From Hell? Quite Possibly. [Big Vent]

Options
Hi all,
I have living nextdoor to me and also across the road the most rude, obnoxious, anti social neighbours I have ever had.

For months before we replaced the old fence, we had nextdoors 3 year old Husky wreck the fence to make it into our garden. Okay the fence was cream crackered but even still. Because the fence is a party fence (1/2 us, 1/2 council) I had to try and get the council to take some sort of responsibility for their tenants and the damage they had caused. That failed. So we had no choice but to take it upon ourselves to replace the fence for our safety (the dog had bitten my partner in May) and I have a baby and young nieces. One day the dog got through again, the woman's grandaughter came to get her, now as I was !!!!ed off at the fact that the dog had got through so many times and had to be taken through the house, I had to say to her that they could no longer bring the dog through the house as I have cats and a dog of my own. In the end I gave in, we barely said two words to one another as she collected the dog. As she was leaving I said that the hole would need to be patched up and that I was onto the council about paying half for a new fence.

Three days later, the eldest son (who is in his 50's) came round with his nephew completly drunk. The nephew was nice, but his uncle was a mouthy rude man who entered the house uninvited (pushed his way in) and proceeded to yell, f'ing and blinding about the fact I insulted his niece (how hello, goodbye and thank you is insulting I do not know) and then turned onto my partner trying to edge him into a fight. Now, while all this was going on my daughter who was 8 months old at the time was screaming her head off and who can blame her?! A community officer appeared out of no where, she had to call for back up as the rowdy drunk would not listen to me or her.

Two officers were here for an hour explaning and mediating between us and the neighbours. I tried to explain to the nephew, with the deeds in my hand, that the fence was in fact a party fence. Nextdoor claimed to the police that it was our fence not theirs, but I would love to have seen their faces when the police told them that actually it is in fact part responsibility of the council to repair the fence. Also, they told the neighbours that any damage the dog had done, it was their duty to repair any holes in the fence. For some odd reason the neighbours seem to think it is our duty to keep their dog out.

Now the fence has been repaired, and we own the fence (according to the council, as we took it upon ourselves to fix the problem) we are hoping the dog doesn't ruin the fence. But I have been told that if she does it is criminal damage. I am nervous about going into the garden now incase she tries to get through! Now, the next best thing is, while I was washing up I saw a piece of rubbish come flying over the fence, I think it was handles off a childs scooter. Not sure if the grandkids accidently threw it over or what, but why do I get the feeling they might be trying to  me off?

Over the road is good buddies with nextdoor, and she is no angel either. When my sister came down from Scotland to see us, over the road was drunk and decided that calling myself and my sister fat was big and clever, she ain't no Kate Moss thats for sure. Now I am starting to feel maybe we should move. I know we are more than likley going to get this anywhere, but all I wanted to do was keep myself to myself. That failed thanks to the dog. :(

I have been told by a lawyer not to have any communication with the family to save anyone saying that we said this or that. Bit hard when Mr Drunk from nextdoor comes round to tell you that one of your cats was trying to get through their window. Which I know the cat in question wouldn't do as she hates dogs and strangers.

One question though: If they damage the fence, do I report it to the police? :)

Sorry for the big rant but I am peed off with them all right now. :o

Didn't want to read and run, but I can't offer any real advice as I'd have delt with things differently. I would never let someone make me feel intimidated in my own home how you kept your cool and didn't punch seven shade of s**t out of the blokes who entered your house I don't know.

I think over than moving your best bet is to start a diary adding there bad behaviour as and when it happens so that your have times and dates should you be able to take things further in future.

As for the fence and the pesky dog is there any kind of deterent you can add to your side f the fence that would discourage the dog from trying to break through?

I am really sorry for your situation. There is little worse then neighbours from hell because unlike work mates you can't come home and get away from them.

I would call the police if the dog does damage anyway, even if they do nothing just to make sure it is on record.

I really sympathise with you Op. I know exactly how you feel. I'm having the same problems and more with my neighbours. The only advice I can offer is keep reporting them to both the council (anti-social behaviour unit) and the police. Eventually they'll get fed up of you and something will get done. Mine now keep their dog chained up constantly in their garden because it dug it's way under my fence and went for my 3 yo. Shame they can't do the same with their unruly kids!

Not sure if it's doable but how about growing some thick hedge or preferably thorny plants (roses?) all alongside it to help keep them out?

That's a good idea. At least if the dog does get through the fence again, it's in for a bit of a surprise.

Have a look at these for other spikey plant ideas.
