Neice leaving college to begin university

I have a neice whose mother doesn't work and has been receiving benefits for her while at college.

She is now between college and university but her benefits have stopped and she hasn't received any grant yet. I'm a bit puzzled what she is supposed to live on

Any advice would be appreciated

Is there a reason why the niece cannot get a job?

How old is the niece, when did she leave college?
    Gone ... or have I?

What "she" are you referring to? The niece or the mother? In both cases, they would need to look for paid employment if their benefits have stopped.

Wages, or sometimes called salary, you receive it for working.

Assuming you're talking about child benefit and child tax credit, if your niece is under 20, her mother should be able to carry on claiming these until the end of August.

Tax credits for the daughter will have stopped, but child benefit should still be received up until end of August as ONW has stated above.
Do either of them maybe work - or is there a valid reason why not? Does the mother have any income whatsoever?
  • My neice has been to a number of High Street stores and contacted a number of organisations in an attempt to find work to keep her going until she starts university. The only job she has manage to find is cleaning out the dressing room at the local football club for £10 a week

Most organisations are getting rid of staff rather than recruiting at the moment. She lives in an economically depressed area and to seek work away from home on a short term basis at 18 years old isn't viable

Some of the replies on this forum not only make unfounded assumptions but smack of arrogance

Why doesn't she sign on for JSA just for the few weeks?

Her mum would lose the CTC & ChB - which might be worth more than £51.85 per week. (JSA amount for under 25s)

People can sign on between courses but her mother will lose her benefits.
