NTSC in the UK

My DVD player has been made multi-region, but will it or my TV be able to show NTSC discs?

Comments

  • Virtually all modern TV's will display NTSC signals and your dvd player will also have no problem playing them.

    Make sure if your dvd player has a menu that the feature is set to automatic because some players will have it switched to pal

    It has more to do with the Output signal to the TV, than the Input to the TV, I suppose it depends on the difference between Scart, Aerial, or Svhs, but the signal given out on a multi regional dvd, so long as it is set correctly should work on any tv that the signal is being fed Into. Hence a multi-regional dvd player, can convert the signal from NTSC to PAL, and vice versa. If I bought a TV from the States, will it not work in the UK, aside from the difference in voltage?

    pal or ntsc are frame rates, check your television supports both pal, (british) and ntsc (american)
    check your dvd players menu for a setting which gives the different standards and make sure its switched to either auto or pal or ntsc dependant upon which dvd you have.
    ======================================
    Region Free DVD Players
    Although all DVD players shipped in the USA have to be set to Region 1, a lot of these players have 'secret' codes that can be entered via the remote control to either change the region code or make them totally Region Free thus enabling the playback of any disc from any region.

    However, although it is possible to change the region code, there is still the problem of the NTSC and PAL video formats. All DVD's sold in the USA would be formatted in NTSC and either be Region 1 or Region 0. Regional codes are entirely optional for the maker of a disc. Discs without codes will play on any player in any country but as the player will only output the video format of the disc, that disc may not be viewable on the television. For example, in the USA, the video format is NTSC and most televisions are NTSC only. If you were to try and play a PAL DVD from Europe on your newly programmed Region Free DVD player, it would also output a PAL video signal which the television could not show as NTSC and PAL are totally incompatible with each other.

    ==================================================
    There are a number of DVD players available in the USA that have built in PAL to NTSC video converters which would overcome the above format problem. Unfortunately, because of legal requirements that the manufacturers have to adhere to, these players are not advertised as having built in conversion facilities.

    On the following pages you can find reviews of DVD players and Recorders that I have researched that have built in video converters. Should you decide to purchase one of these players or indeed already have one, you should be aware that the player will come to you preset to Region 1 as per the legal requirements mentioned above.

    On each review page, we also give details on how to unlock that particular player using the 'secret' pre programmed codes.

    I still disagree
    My sony dvd player attached the to tosh TV in the living room is harware multi region, bought early in the life of DVD and required a hardware modifiaction. this plays all dvd's no problem. I also used my Sony PS2 to play a region 1 DVD that was RCE encoded and wouldnt play on the sony dvd player it played five again on the tosh TV.

    I also have a sony TV and another sony DVD player in my room the same DVD played from both the dvd player or the PS2 both display as interlaced black and white. on the sony tv. I also tried the sony tv on the sony dvd player downstairs and it also displayed B+W so it is the ability of the TV to display an NTSC picture nothing to do with the source. There are players that can process an NTSC in to a PAL signal but they are expensive.

    its actually down to the dvd player! *smile*, I have a dvd player that has several onboard menus, one of which gives the different conversion standards or "frame rates", normally dvd players for the uk are set to pal, this is because normally your television set is set to pal.
    pal resolution is much highter than ntsc.
    heres the solution and why some players work
    buy a region free player that has a video conversion built in too. My particular player has three settings, auto, pal, ntsc, what this actually really does is that if the signal from the dvd disk is ntsc, it converts it to pal to play on a pal television.
    so, in reality it converts

    do a search on google
    or try Aria.co.uk
    they have a range of dvd players that have the converter built in
