saving for deposit vrs spending on home improvements

i have a bit of a dilema:

im wanting to move house, however need to save for a deposit. the house im currently in was bought in 2007 and we carried out complete renovation. unfortunately due to the crash, we wont see this money back....anyway im wanting to get my hall re-plastered and put down new flooring - total cost of this will be about £1000, but im struggling to let go of the savings iv got so far

what would you guys do? put up with a horrible hallway for a couple more years and keep the savings, or get the hall re-done and have to wait longer to move

just looking for some opinions on what you would do yourselves.

im desperate to move, but i know it will be years before i can afford to

  • If it's going to be years before you can move why not spend some savings on making your home as comfortable and as presentable as possible? It's money you're going to have to spend any way so why not get the benefit of it yourself?

It all depends on how much of a dent in your total savings that £1k will make

yeah that was my thinking too, but it will be hard to lose the money initially i suppose!

my OH is just worried cause we have already spent so much on the place and we wont see it back

maybe il win the lottery and not need to worry bout it

you also dont know what might happen to the market, it could stay the same as predicted, but it might pick up and in which case you may see a return on your cash spent on diy, however, for me, its also about the return you get by living in a pleasant surrounding. do as much of it yourself and use good but inexpensive materials (some nice vinyl on the floor) and you keep the cost down as much as possible
