We stayed at hotel delmar near the port area 10mins form gothic and las ramblas. Also near the franco train station for a cheap and comfortable ride from the airport, plenty of buses and a subway station close by.

Prices vary it was around £50 when we booked it 2009.

Learn to use the public transport is is cheap and easy once you get the hang of it.

A popular place with the cruising crowd is this one right on las ramblas

We stayed in the Gothic quarter near Franco station and had a really nice relaxed holiday - the area was perfect, chilled out with a bit of character, plenty of nice bars and a good food market nearby. Barceloneta is another option - near the beach but a bit more touristy and without the tiny alleyways to meander through. The metro in Barcelona is very good so don't worry too much about it - just don't take enormous bags on the Metro as there are often no escalators.

We and our friends rented apartments via Apartments Ramblas and found them to be excellent - better facilities than a hotel and far cheaper. The staff were brilliant.

Just be sensible with your bag in Barcelona - keep all belongings in front of you, don't take huge branded camera bags and carry all but your pocket change in a money belt. Don't let it spoil your trip but just be aware that it is a busy city and pickpockets are rarely pursued by the police.
