Raspberry advice please

A couple of years ago I was given two raspberry canes bought from Netto's, it was about May/June time and they were planted in a bed and to my surprise I actually had a few raspberries that first year. Then came an unexpected move and the two canes were dug up and replanted in Jan of last year. Not surprisingly they didn't do much but again had a few fruits and they did grow in height quite a bit. Was advised by neighbour to cut them back in Feb which I did and they went berserk  I now have a six foot by six foot raspberry patch and it would be bigger but I lifted some of the canes that were encroaching on the tomato plot. Once again I have raspberries but they appear to only be on the old canes so what do I do with them this year once they've finished fruiting? I have no idea what type they are as there were no tags on the original two canes. Any advice appreciated.

Jackie

Sounds like they may be summer fruiting ones as they are fruiting on old wood only

Once they have finished fruiting, cut down the OLD fruiting canes and leave the new ones alone, they will bear fruit next year [2011]

In 2011, do same again, remove the old [2010 wood] and leave the 2011 canes for 2012, continue until they take over your garden :D

  • Cut down the old canes ie the brown ones and leave the green ones alone. In the spring use some granual feed of blood fish and bone and water in well over the course of 3/4 weeks from about March onwards and you should get a better crop next year
