Renting Query

Options
Hi everyone, this is my first post so apologies if this has been asked before, I did a search but nothing really fitted with what I am asking...

Basically, myself and my boyfriend are wanting to rent as we currently cannot afford to buy but we really want to get a place of our own asap (sick of being at home etc etc..) My problem is I have just started a new job, after having worked part time (finished course earlier this year but stayed in my home town so still didn't get chance to move out!) and the job is actually with a temp agency but the role is an ongoing contract.... My boyfriend is working freelance ad has been doing since May and now needs the space of his own place to work from rather than from his bedroom, the thing is he also has debts and probably a bad credit rating from going over his overdraft and late credit card payments a few times (can you get a bad rating from this or is it more severe cases?!)

Would these factors stop us from being being accepted as tenants?? I am a bit confused as to what to do and who to contact, as I am a bit worried about making an application to a letting agency, failing the credit check and having that on a record? Is it better to rent from a private landlord? Or are there letting agencies that help people in this sort of situation? People rent easily all the time, am I making it too compilated for no reason?!

Any advice would be much apprecaited! Thanks

It won't make any difference if you go through an agency or a private LL. You will have to pass a credit check whichever way (although not ALL private LLs do this.)

As you are both effectively self-employed, you will both need guarantors to pass the checks.
  • Depends on the LL. I would need reassuring that my house would be looked after and that rent would be paid.

May be that a larger deposit would ease my nerves (perhaps 2 or 3 months rent).

    Good luck.

    :)

There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those that don't.
  • Thank you for your replies.

Does working as a temp mean I am self emloyed then? Also, although my partner works from home, he does actually work for a company, being paid a wage each month, as am I... <confused!>

Suppose a credit check fails, what then? Is it just a case of waiting??

Thanks again guys, as you can tell, I am clueless when it comes to all this! :(
