got a letter today regarding settlement of the account i have with them..
i owe £70 and they have said if i pay 50% of the balance (£35) i can settle the account and the credit file will be marked settled..
Is this "wording" ok re f+f?
i also contacted them today and said it will be paid upon a satisfactory letter being recieved by myself. They flatley refused and also failed to give me a call reference number " as they record all calls".
so ive fired off an email to confirm what i said in the call..

I'd reply to the letter in writing, with a cheque for the £35. Then, even if they don't acknowledge it's settled (which they more than likely won't in my experience), you'll still have their letter with the offer and you'll be able to prove the cheque was cashed by them with your bank.
You'll have the paper trail needed if they act inappropriately.
Also, check your credit file after a month or two and see if the entry is marked as settled.PMA - Positive Mental Attitude

They need to send you a letter stating if you pay £35 you will be absolved of all liabillity for the remainder and your credit file will be marked as settled , if they dont they will chase you for the rest .To prevent court action we would like to offer you a discount on your balance to end this matter amicably:

I'm afraid I slightly disagree, as for £35 it would be worth paying it anyway. As either way you benefit right? If you pay £35 and they mark it as settled - happy days. If they don't, and then chase you for the other £35 then at least you will have already paid half the money that, afterall, you owed someone and now them.
There's been a similar thread recently where I know wrinkles disagrees, but I did what your are proposing to do - and take them at their word and they did exactly what they promised - even though I didn't get a letter stating the account was closed. I simply checked my credit file and the account was marked as settled.
If I were you, I would get yourself free of the debt - not drag it on over 3 years! Also, you're SO lucky the debt is so small anyway. I wish some of my debts had only been £70.PMA - Positive Mental Attitude

Its not that i disagree with paying to get rid of them its the skulldugery they get up to that i disagree with , i think if they were upfront and honest with people they would get a better responseI'm afraid I slightly disagree, as for £35 it would be worth paying it anyway. Yeh, I understand - but this person only has a debt of £70 total anyway, so in this case I think it's worth paying the £35 and then they'll either get a settled account or they'll have at least halved the debt. Either way, they win. I think the OP offering £1 is a bad idea, when they can potentially be free of the debt much sooner.PMA - Positive Mental Attitude
