nPower direct debit query
I recently did the decent thing (never again) and submitted meter reads to nPower. I got a prompt e-mail with a new bill telling me that the d/d would rise from £49 to £77.
My question is, do I have to accept this or can I ask that they keep it as it was? We will leave the property at the end of September (end of lease) and I will happily pay any amount owed to them on leaving, I'd just rather not have one of my bills shoot up by the best part of £30!

You could ask. Whether they agree will depend of the exact details.
Or you could tell them you no longer wish to pay monthly by direct debit and wish to pay quarterly on receipt of bill (which may end up more expensive)
Anyway, if you are prepared to pay all of what you owe at the end of September, why are you not prepared to pay a little extra this month? It sounds like you probably will be owing a lot more than £28 come the end of September either way

No you don't have to accept that, my Mum had similar last summer and had similar figures to yourself. Looked at the previous 12 months of bills and told them a new figure little more than what she was paying (after all she was also in credit) :j0 -
You don't have to accept it & can cancel your DDI any time you wish. You should, as others suggest above however consider whether you will pay any more for doing so & what benefit you gain from doing so given that it's nearly Sept now & you say you are happy to pay them then.0

They presumably will have calculated the new DD on an annual basis, assuming that you will be in the property thru' next Winter - deffo worth a phone call to tell them that you are leaving the property in 6 weeks and will happily?? settle the final bill after that.0

When was your last meter reading? It could be that your account has been underestimated for a while and this latest reading has updated your account.
You don't need to 'accept' any decision - from any gas or electricity company. If you're unhappy, you have the right to raise this. Call the customer services team and explain the situation. If it does turn out that yes, the amount is correct and that you do need to pay more, the team should be able to work out an affordable amount for you to pay on a monthly basis.
If you've had your meters read regularly and haven't used anything to significantly change your energy use, then you're payments shouldn't change significantly either.
At least two days before you move into your new place, get in touch with your supplier to let them know that you're moving. Then arrange with npower for the closing meter readings to be taken.
As soon as you move in, contact the company which supplies your house and give them your meter readings straight away. If you're unsure who the supplier is, you can check with the landlord or estate agency and they should be able to let you know.
