On the day of moving house

We moved last weekend and had the whole thing planned like a military operation.
The removal company charged £60 per hour and we had the whole move done in less than 2 hours!
If you can, book the removal van for the afternoon, that way you can phone the estate agent/solicitor in the morning to get confirmation that the keys can be released (as Richard says priior to the solicitor going off on lunch!).
Then, pick up the keys, if possible have time to check you can open the doors of your new pad prior to going back to the old pad.
Go back to the old pad and wait on the removal men - have your stuff packed and everything down from upstairs (if possible) - then you can clean up stairs)
When the removal men arrive have some friends to help load the stuff on, or set at the foot of the lorry (this saves time = money).
Leave one person behind (if possible) to clean up ground floors where all the furniture and boxes have been), when that person is finished they can hand over keys of old pad back to letting agent/new owner.
Arrive at new pad, get the removal men to move everything into the garage (if you have one) or essential items - bed, sofa and tv into house. Let the removal men leave asap, and your friends can carry in the rest etc
And that is how we moved in less than 2 hours for £120:jGroceries challenge

If you are in a chain, like most of us, you will find the sale on yours goes through before your purchase. I had a nail-biting 3 hours between selling my flat and being able to collect the key to my new house. However, single people do this all the time - yes friends and family can be useful, but they can also be stressful! Your removals people also do this all the time and will tell you what time they need to arrive.
I believe you normally aim to be packed and ready by midday. I was doing a final clean at that point. Your EA will tell you what to do with your key and your vendor's will arrange to hand over a key to you - I've always been met by an EA at the property I'm buying with a key for me.
Don't worry about this stuff - it just all happens - Lincroft1710 is spot-on!!0
