Clamwin. Free & Effective. Well worth a try.

All
Looking at a few other posts there is a bit of discussion around security/anti virus programems etc.... so here is my 2p worth!

I have a few different virus systems, Firewall etc.....

The most 'interesting' is Clamwin

http://www.clamwin.com/

Its FREE
Its updated almost daily
It nearly always 'digs out' some deep rooted nasties. I average about one per week!!!

I run it every week - it takes about 3 hours....but it is VERY thorough.

It basically hunts down any Trojans etc....that have slipped past your usual security systems. (remember a virus will only be blocked if your antivirus programme know it exists...sometimes they hit your system before a 'virus definition' is created).

Its well worth downloading and trying it out. You may be surprised by what it finds - I was!

Good question........i'm always amazed how they get in. The only secure way is dont connect to the net!

Try Clamwin for yourself.......I'd be interested to hear if you dig out any deep rooted nasties from your system.

  • Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.
The nasties get in because your anti-virus program doesn't have a real-time scanner. If you want to hold the blighters at bay, you need a real-time scanner monitoring your machine constantly.

I've been meaning to check out clamwin for a while.

There is a portable version here so you don't have to install it.

Since it isn't installed and doesn't have a resident scanner, it should be good for a second anti-virus that won't interfere with another AV already installed.

I have 3 anitvirus programmes that are real time. (MS, McAfee,Avast). In addition I have a couple of pop up and adware progs installed.

But as I have found some nasties get in before they are 'defined' by the virus system.

I find that Clamwin priovides a useful method of removing stuff that you didn't even know you had.......

As per the prevous reply - give it a go. Its FREE and it would be interesting to see if its only me who gets things sneaking in under the wire so to speak?

Most people run a few different ones usually dont they?
Even my works laptop (major Bluechip company) runs 2.

Some systems can clash - but you need to test them.

PC Pro did an article a while back reccomending more than 1 as no single one is foolproof.

Different programmes catch different nasties at different times..........hence me reccomending Clamwin...........as per other post........please try it and put a post on to let others know if it works for you?

I'm only trying to do a good turn here.........It works for me.......it may just work for you.........

Symantec strongly recommends that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. Your best defense against computer viruses and malicious programs is to keep your virus definitions up to date, and run Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time. (The Norton AntiVirus module that is active in memory is named Auto-Protect. Other antivirus programs will have different names for this function.)

If you are running a Microsoft operating system such as Windows, Microsoft has an even stronger recommendation. The following is quoted from the Microsoft Article 189264 Plus! 98: How to Remove McAfee VirusScan:

"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
