mouldy soap drawer

Options
Can anyone tell me why....

My washing machine soap drawer keeps going mouldy. Its the side where the softner goes.

I use vinegar as softner and clean it regularily but the drawer behind the softner bit goes mouldy within a few days.

What am I doing wrong and how can I prevent it?
Fat and proud lol

can you take it off and soak it in a solution of bleach and water in the washing up bowl overnight? I do this and it comes up clean in the morning!
    :)
  • i always pull mine out and leave it out for an hour (or until i remember) to "dry" it out, after i had a spell of it going mouldy. seems to help.

I find it helps to leave the drawer slightly out when the machine is not in use.
This helps the moisture dry off.

Unless you really can't do without softener, try using washing balls instead of using the drawer - it really cuts down on the cleaning. Otherwise, a bit of vinegar or bleach in the drawer and leave it pulled out overnight to dry should work.
  • I'd like to be able to clean the black mould at the BACK of the soap drawer and beyond.

The best I've managed is to squirt some bleach via a sprayer but it's never enough to do the job properly.

Can you not pull the drawer out completely? Look at your instruction book to check your particular model to make sure you don't smash it, but generally if you pull it out as far as it'll go and then lift it up, it'll just slide out, and then you can get at the back of it. Stick some washing soda into the drawer and put it on a hot wash (95 degrees if poss), and that should shift it

(Thanks to the person who posted this tip on another thread whose name I've completely forgotten)
  • I have removed the soap drawer completey. It's the bit that houses it and towards the back of that part which is so hard to get at.

I was wondering if there is a high pressure steam cleaner with the right attachment that would reach back that far?

I have had the same problem, i had to get machine man out and he told me to put a boil wash through about once a month to keek it mould free, and yes a good steam clean should get the mould and black off then do a boil wash with vingar in every so often hope this helps.
