Get a mix of views, be a bit patient, put two economists in a room get three opinions. Techies are the same, wait a couple of days, narrow the responses down and focus down on what you think, then ask for any clarification you may need.

Pretty much every network admin (that i have spoken to) who has mcafee installed can't wait to see it gone from the network.

oh, and i recently looked at a brand new laptop that was running slow and mcafee was the cause as it took a few mins to start up/shut down. i removed mcafee and it took the startup/shutdown times to around 30 seconds.

It's inevitable that any good anti virus will have a degree of performance impact. Many anti virus programs do more than just a daily ( or whenever the user can remember to ) scan on the system......but actively keep an eye out for root kits, key loggers, etc etc. And some, such as Macafee Security Center ( which I have free with BT Internet ) , incorporate a firewall.

I moved to Macafee from Nortons ( which IS a system hog ) as soon as I discovered it was free with my broadband.......though BT don't exactly go out of their way to highlight that. Can't say I've seen much performance impact...running on Vista.

What I DO find annoying ( and this is true with most anti virus ) is the sheer length of time it now takes to run scans. Back in 1998 the virus list was like 20,000 items and a scan would take 5 minutes. Last I looked it was over 200,000 items and takes over an hour. At some point, one's anti virus is going to be running ALL DAY !

Ah....maybe Schrodinger devised the experiment after watching England play ! At times in the World Cup I had to seriously wonder if I'd entered some parallel universe with blind referees and the local village green team playing instead of England.
