The account type (PAYG or Contract) has no bearing whatsoever on whether a handset will work or not.
and what are you paying for?
That's a matter that comes down to personal opinion.

Thats not strictly true, you need to make sure your tariff has Blackberry Internet Service (BIS), otherwise you won't be able to use the internet, not even through your own WiFi router.

You need to make sure that the BB is not assigned to an existing BIS account. Otherwise you won't be able to use it with your account. It's a while since I used a BB, but back then for some reason you could only change the device in your account and the old one became available again to be used with another (new) account. Or you had to call Vodafone and ask them to delete the BIS account manually.

Maybe it will be released from the old account as soon as the guy who sells you the phone cancels his contract...

Just be aware it is a smartphone and will like to connect to the internet if you let it, so make sure if you are going to use the internet with it that you have a data plan with your sim, some charge alot per MB.
