Student - Partner Pregnant

I'd been hoping to go to Uni in September. My girlfriend has just finished Uni, and we've recently found out she's pregnant.

We're considering all our options at the minute, whether we can afford to keep it etc, and wondered if anyone could help?

If we decide I should still go to Uni, what sort of benefits would I/my girlfriend/we be entitlied to? She's unemployed having only just left Uni, and we'd be moving hundreds of miles away from our homes. Obviously I'd still get my student loan/grant, but would we be entitled to child tax credit, housing benefit etc?

As I say, we're exploring all our options at the minute and just want to know where we stand. Any help greatly appreciated.

Uni grants and loans (apart from adults dependants grants) is ignored by tax credits. You can get housing benefit (or local housing allownce) if your student loans and grants and your girlfriends' income is low enough.

Certain amounts of student finance are disregarded for benefits.

is your g/f not looking to start a career after finishing Uni? Did she get a degree/qualification? If she is just pregnant, it might be a good idea for her to start work now.

She is looking to start a career, but we all know there aren't many jobs out there. She's very close to 9 weeks. We're exploring all options, what we can afford etc, seeing if Uni is still faesible.

sh1305 - Thanks, didn't know about that. Do you know if my girlfriend would be eligible for JSA if we keep it, even though I'd be a student? (AFAIK she wouldn't be eligible for it if she was living with me, but I don't know if pregnancy changes that?)

Your income would be taken into account for JSA. Unless she's paid eough national insurance over the lst 2 tax years.

If she hasnt been working it would be income based JSA she would get if she was activly seeking employment, but your income may be too high for her to recieve anything.
Once baby is born you will get child tax credits. Working tax credits if one of you is working at least 16hours per week.
Housing benefit will take into account any student loans/bursarys you get so you may not get any.
