Warning: o2's NOT so free Long Weekends!

Options
I'm sure a lot of you have signed up for o2 long weekends, where you get free weekend calls (forget how many) as long as you're in your 'home' postal code (the one you registered for the offer).

Now, I used to work for o2, and when my phone was being charged for what I thought should be free calls I gave them a call to talk tech with them.

The offer is so unfair - basically when you register, it only applies the deal to your nearest cellsite (think big antenna!). There can be tens of cellsites where you live (I live in a city centre and my little postal code has 5 cell sites). You have no way of knowing which cell site you are connected to, but if it isn't the nearest, you are charged for the call. See cell sites can only handle so many calls before your call is handled by another one.

You can't even make a short call, check your credit, then call again, because you might connect to a different cell site!

So in effect it is a total lucky dip whether you get your free call. So think before you make a call on the basis it's free - it may well not be (in fact the busier the place you live is, the odds are against you!)

I'm not on O2 and don't really know anything of this offer, but couldn't someone complain if they phoned, say, from their own home each time and were in the same postcode.

The offer applies to the postcode and not the cell doesn't it???

    Thanks for the tip!

Well knowing o2 as I do it'll be in the t&c's. When they say 'your postcode' you really expect it to be 'your postcode' and not 'the nearest cell site to that postcode'.

I can imagine people complaining but I doubt they'd get anywhere. But it's unfair nevertheless - how many thousands of people are making calls they think are free?

    O2 Long Weekends
Now every weekend is a long weekend with O2 Long Weekends.

When you opt into O2 Long Weekends between July 13th and September 30th 2006, you can enjoy free* calls on your Pay & Go™ mobile from your chosen home postcode area for up to 2 months from date of successfully opting in.

Simply top up £10 each month and you will receive free* calls to O2 mobiles and standard UK fixed line numbers (starting 01 or 02) every Saturday, Sunday & Monday whenever you are within your chosen home postcode.

Text WEEKENDS POSTCODE to 21300 free to opt into O2 Long Weekends. Example: WEEKENDS SL14DX to 21300. Please ensure you include a space between the word WEEKENDS and your postcode.

    * Your O2 Long Weekends minutes are for use within your registered postcode only subject to network coverage.
Fair usage policy is 500 minutes per month.

    - That's all it says on the o2 site, without digging though point 8 text in some obscure link (which I haven't found yet!) - they are certainly stretching the truth with this promise.
  • I work for o2 Pay Monthly contracts and the long weekend counts for all calls made regardless of where you live......are you on payg op?

Sorry didnt read the above posting quoting t&cs
  • Kittykate, how long did you work at O2 for? obviously not long enough.

The O2 longweek end promotion works the same way as the O2 Homezone promotion, so you register your postcode, within your registered postal code there will be a number of cells and each cell can have upto 6 sectors attached to it, if the call is generated from one of the selected cells the call will be free, in most cases O2 can change the postal code based on your call information so that you can benefit from the promotion.

The only thing you need to bother to do is call 100 and ASK!!.

If the advisor who deals with you does not appear to know what they are on about, ask to speak to a manager!!
  • i cant get it where i am as the signal is not very good here unless you are by the window and and in the front room we are on one post code and in the bedroom its another one yet its yards aways for each other
