Mackenzie Hall Letters, What To Do?

I've recently received letters from Mackenzie Hall concerning some debts that go back to 2002, however I've checked my credit rating and record and there's nothing on there about it, I want to clear my debts and am willing to come to some agreement to get them paid off so long as I genuinely need to, if these old debts have already been cleared off my record then I have no need to pay them. I don't really know how it all works but I do want to sort my credit rating out and the sooner the better.
Should I pay them or can I get advice from somewhere concerning these debts?
Thanks.

Dear Sir/Madam
Ref Number: ______, Agreement Number: _____
You have contacted me regarding the account with the above reference number, which you claim is owed by myself.
I would point out that under the Limitation Act 1980 Section 5 "an action founded on simple contract shall not be brought after the expiration of six years from the date on which the cause of action accrued".
I would also point out that the OFT say under their Debt Collection Guidance on statute barred debt that "it is unfair to pursue the debt if the debtor has heard nothing from the creditor during the relevant limitation period".
The last correspondence/payment/acknowledgement or payment of this debt was made over six years ago and no further acknowledgement or payment has been made since that time. Unless you can provide evidence of payment or written contact from me in the relevant period under Section 5 of the Limitation Act, I suggest that you are no longer able to take any court action against me to recover the alleged amount claimed.
The OFT Debt Collection Guidance states further that "continuing to press for payment after a debtor has stated that they will not be paying a debt because it is statute barred could amount to harassment contrary to section 40 (1) of the Administration of Justice Act 1970".
I await your written confirmation that no further contact will be made concerning the above account and confirmation that this matter is now closed.
I look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully

Mackenzie Hall specialize in buying up old debts for a fraction of the cost and writing threatening letters. If they are over 6 years old, they cannot enforce them in court. They can write as many letters as they like. Check all 3 credit reference agencies. If you want to pay them its up to you, but personally I wouldn't give Debt Collection Agencies any money.Debts at LBM - Mortgages £128497 - non mortgage £27497 Debt now £[STRIKE]114150[/STRIKE][STRIKE]109032[/STRIKE] 64300 (mortgage) Credit cards left 0

Does this statute barring thing apply to student loans? I have been "asked" to pay mine back this year - payments now coming out of my salary - nine years or so after i took it out, having heard nothing until this year!0
