Probably dumb question about wifi dongle

I have a 3 Mobile Broadband dongle on contract, that I use on my new netbook.

Was just wondering whether it could be used on a different laptop to the one I initially installed it on, i.e. could it be swapped between two computers, or would that confuse it?

I've had my old laptop repaired and my OH could use it when I'm away (don't want him using my new toy!), but it seems silly to buy him a separate broadband package when I will never need the 5GB allocation I get each month.

Sorry if this is an 11 in terms of 1-10 level of stupidity :o.
:D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

Yes you can use your broadband dongle on another laptop other than the one you originally installed it on. Just install the software on the new laptop, insert the dongle and you will be good to go. How dumb do you feel now? :) Just playing with ya, it might seem trivial to some but you asked a valid question and you definitely don't want to be buying another broadband package when you can be sharing the same dongle.

  • There is never a dumb question, because if you ask it, someone else is thinking it.

also of note. Most dongles usually carry their installation data on the dongle, so it should be just a case of plugging it in to install and not some CD or something.

And thanks to you too TP. I didn't get any installation software with the dongle, which is just as well as there is no drive in my netbook, so I assumed it was just a matter of sticking it in the USB port and following the instructions.

Couldn't remember if I had to enter any details as to what device I was installing it on, which is why I wondered whether it is registered for exclusive use on one machine, or portable to others.

Now you are trying to be smart, but..... you are wrong.
Wi-Fi (pronounced /ˈwaɪfaɪ/) is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance that manufacturers may use to brand certified products that belong to a class of wireless local area network (WLAN) devices based on the IEEE 802.11 standards, which is by far the most widespread WLAN class today. Because of the close relationship with its underlying standards, the term Wi-Fi is often used as a synonym for IEEE 802.11 technology.
