Just wanted to find out if anyone has come across Tyfin Capital Planning Ltd as I was recommended them and am thinking of going to them for IFA service. Thanks for any experiences with them.

Did they ring you?
Are there any other IFAS in your area?
They are a "known" company in your area.
Never pay for advice and always seek a second opinion. For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

Could I suggest you post on here what sort of service you're looking for from an IFA - i.e. what it is that you want advice about?0 -
Thanks all. Its for a investment portfolio for pension purposes as I don't have a pension.
Fairtrade - No, I called them as my friend has used them though not for pension investment. My friend recommended them. When you say 'known" did you get that from a register of IFAs?0 -
Follow this link, it leads to the FSA register:-

I don't think I really agree with this. Quality advice has to be paid for. When you go to see the IFA they will (or should) give you the option of taking commission or a fee (in which case any commission they earn is redirected to your investments). Usually the fee is the better choice for impartial advice.Never pay for advice and always seek a second opinion.
I'm not even sure a second opinion is really always needed as long as you fully comprehend what they have told you and it makes sense.
Choosing an IFA is hard but if you already have a recommendation from a friend and nobody here has any negative comments about the company I would say go for it.0 -

Thanks. I realise that part of the problem isn't that I don't trust HIM its that I don't know anything about investments and one of the things we discussed was that if I wanted to change anything in the portfolio I could ring up and he could arrange it. This is worrying me a little because - how would I know what I wanted to change since I know little or nothing about markets, investments and the likes.0 -
Hmmm. That doesn't sound quite right. As you say the type of people who go to an IFA are those who don't know about investments - otherwise they would be handling it themselves.
I would expect the IFA to review your portfolio with you every now and then and rebalance it. Perhaps the ability to ask for changes was in addition to this? e.g. If you suddenly decided India was the next big thing you could phone them up and get them to move some money over ahead of the next review.
However if it was instead of regular reviews then you would be better off finding an IFA that specialises in investments.0 -
Thanks Reaper.
Lazy of me, what I should have said is never pay for unsolicited advice. Yes a properly regulated IFA will either charge a rate or do work on a commission basis. For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.
